PTU PARKER ENERGY TRANSMISSION BLOCK
The energy transmission block (PTU) is a device used to transfer hydraulic energy from one system to another without exchanging fluid between these systems. The PTU consists of two separate but connected axial piston rotating groups, with a common cardan shaft and mounting adapter. The PTU mechanically connects two hydraulic systems so that when hydraulic pressure from the control system is activated, it controls the hydraulic motor, which then transfers rotational power through the common shaft to the hydraulic pump, which in turn converts the rotational energy back into hydraulic pressure for system two.
The motor side is slightly larger in displacement than the pump side to compensate for mechanical losses (breakthrough characteristics) inside the device while maintaining pressure in the system. The pump side includes a drain port for internal leakage, cooling, and idle bypass back to the reservoir. The idle bypass flow allows the PTU to operate smoothly and continuously at any consumption, from zero to nominal. When the idle bypass flow is not properly installed according to the design, the PTU may operate intermittently during low flow conditions and cause audible noise throughout the aircraft.
The simplest and most common configuration of the PTU used in aircraft today consists of two rotating rotating groups with constant displacement that rotate only in one direction, thereby transferring power only in one direction. In other Parker Aerospace applications, rotating groups with variable displacement are used and operate in two directions, providing the ability to transfer power in any direction. These devices are significantly more complex, requiring complex hydro-mechanical control elements to ensure proper operation.
APPLICATIONS:
Parker Aerospace PTU can be found in various commercial and military aircraft, including Embraer 170/190, Bombardier CRJ-700/900, COMAC ARJ-21, Mitsubishi Regional Jet, Bombardier C Series, Boeing 737, Gulfstream business jets, plus Boeing C-17 and KC-10.
